This year wasn’t about discovering the latest trends or binge watching a new series for me. Instead, 2024 became a year of revisiting the familiar, finding comfort and joy in things I’ve loved for years. It was a reminder that sometimes, the stories and songs that stay with us are the ones we keep coming back to.
Watching….
- Community: This was the show I revisited most often. Years later, it’s still a masterclass in creative storytelling, with every episode feeling like a new genre experiment. The all-star cast and the genius of Joe and Anthony Russo brought a level of depth and humor that’s hard to find anywhere else. Whether it’s the chaos of “Remedial Chaos Theory” or the cinematic brilliance of the paintball episodes, it feels like reconnecting with old friends.
- 30 Rock: Its absurd humor and quick wit remain unmatched. It’s my go-to when I need a laugh.
- Only Murders in the Building: Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez kept the murder mystery genre quirky, fresh, and endlessly charming.
- Veep & Hacks: Political satire and sharp comedy that hold up to repeat viewings.
- SNL: Always a constant in my lineup, even if it’s hit or miss.
- See How They Run: This clever whodunit starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan was a delightful escape.
- Neal Brennan: Still one of my favorite comedians. His introspective and cutting humor resonates every time.
Listening….
Music was my grounding force this year. It wasn’t about finding new artists but leaning into the ones who’ve already carved a place in my life: No surprises here…I am a Sam Fan.
- Samantha Fish & Jesse Dayton’s Cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “I’ll Be Here in the Morning” (Live): A raw, gorgeous performance that hit all the right notes.
- Samantha Fish: Tracks like If I Was Your Woman and Hello Strangers continued to showcase her unparalleled talent.
- Yo-Yo Ma’s Baroque Collection: Perfect for moments of quiet reflection.
- Andy McKee: His acoustic guitar artistry feels like storytelling without words.
- Yo La Tengo: Their blend of nostalgia and reinvention kept them in heavy rotation.
- Jason Isbell’s Weathervane was the masterpiece that keeps on giving
Reflection…
2024 wasn’t about chasing the next big thing. Instead, it was a year of reconnecting with stories and sounds that have shaped me. In revisiting Community, I found myself drawn back to Greendale’s chaos and creativity—proof that great art stands the test of time. The same goes for the music that filled my days, reminding me that revisiting the familiar doesn’t mean standing still; it’s about finding something new in the things we love.
