Algorithmic Bias in Women’s Health: The Invisible Threat

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are rapidly transforming health care systems, promising significant advancements. However, a silent and insidious problem—algorithmic bias—poses a considerable threat to equitable health care, particularly for women. Despite the potential of AI to revolutionize medicine, deploying these technologies without sufficient consideration of gender differences risks perpetuating and even exacerbating existing health disparities.

The Hidden Bias in Diagnostic Tools

Diagnostic tools powered by AI are increasingly common in clinics and hospitals. Consider a middle-aged woman in Indiana experiencing chest pain who visits her local clinic. An AI-driven diagnostic tool assesses her symptoms but fails to recognize her condition as heart disease—a leading cause of death among women. Instead, it misattributes her symptoms to anxiety, a common misdiagnosis for women presenting with cardiac issues. This scenario is not hypothetical; it is a real and growing concern.

Studies have shown that AI systems can exhibit gender bias, particularly in diagnostic tools. Heart disease symptoms in women often differ from those in men. While men typically experience the classic symptom of chest pain, women may present with subtler signs like fatigue, shortness of breath, or back pain. AI systems trained on datasets that over-represent male patients may overlook these critical differences, leading to delayed or incorrect diagnoses for women.

Treatment Recommendations: A Gendered Divide
