An echo of his voice

Today, I’d like to share a tribute to Harrison Ullmann, a figure whose journalistic integrity and unyielding voice left an indelible mark on me, the city of Indianapolis and beyond. Harrison’s career, particularly his tenure at NUVO Newsweekly, was characterized by a fierce commitment to truth and an unwavering dedication to challenging the status quo.

Harrison Ullmann (1936-2000) served as the editor of NUVO Newsweekly, an Indianapolis alternative newspaper, from 1992 until his passing in 2000. Known for his provocative style and acerbic wit, Ullmann was unafraid to tackle Indiana’s political landscape head-on. His contributions were not just to journalism but to the fabric of Indianapolis itself, holding those in power accountable and voicing the concerns of the many.

Under his leadership, NUVO became a platform for critical journalism, diving deep into issues that affected the community. From covering narcotic roadblocks by Indianapolis police to addressing the challenges faced by the city’s public schools, Ullmann’s work and that of his team at NUVO pushed the boundaries of investigative reporting. One of his notable efforts was the exhaustive coverage of a 1996 brawl involving city police officers, demonstrating his commitment to transparency and accountability.

Harrison’s legacy extends beyond his journalistic achievements. He was a mentor and a friend to many, including myself during our time together at NUVO. His approach to journalism—marked by a rare blend of intelligence, wit, and compassion—inspired not only his colleagues but also the generations that followed. He was always more than kind to me and my family, more than insightful to his readers and more than influential to the moderation of the political forces of the times.

As we reflect on Harrison Ullmann’s contributions, it’s clear that his impact on Indianapolis and journalism as a whole is profound. His work exemplifies the critical role journalists play in our society: to question, to reveal, and to inform. Harrison’s legacy serves as a reminder of the power of words and the importance of integrity in our pursuit of truth.

In honor of Harrison, let us continue to carry forward the values he exemplified: courage, fairness, and a relentless pursuit of justice. His voice, one that championed the disenfranchised and challenged the powerful, remains a beacon for journalists and citizens alike, urging us all to look deeper and speak louder in the face of injustice. This blog is, in some small way, an echo of his voice.
